You will need to rent gates at airports before trying to create a route to that airport. Otherwise, the desired airport will not show in the dropdown menu when trying to create a route.
Navigate to the Rent Gate area by going to the Operations page, and click Rent Gate.
There are a number of options on this page. At the top of the page, under the heading "Rent Gates" is a drop down menu. There are three ways to find airports. You can sort by country, continent or search by the IATA or ICAO code. Select the method you want.

Country
There is a list of countries (and flags) on this page. Click on the country of the airport you want to rent the gate in. This will bring up a list a airports in the country (see below for what to do next).
Continent
There is a map of the world and table with all the continents (more accurately regions) of the world in it. Either click on the desired continent on the map or on the links to the side. This will bring you into a list the same as for countries (except showing all airports in that chosen region).
Search
A box comes up into which you type the IATA or ICAO code. This will bring up a page similar to countries or continents but hopefully with only one airport.
Airport List
Once you have found the airport you want, you need to actually rent it. The table which comes up has a lot of information.
Starting at the left:
- The View link takes you to another page with more information on the airport you have selected, including a map of it's location and information on all routes going to it.
- Next are the IATA and ICAO codes, just for your information.
- Next is the airport's name.
- Next is the passengers. Remember, the more passengers there are at an airport, the greater the demand there will be on a route to that city.
- Next is the number of gates remaining. Naturally, you can't rent more gates than there are remaining.
- Next is the cost of renting the gate. This fee (in Euros) is charged monthly (every day of real time). Larger airports (by passengers) have higher fees.
- Next is the amount of cargo shipped from the airport. Don't worry about this, the stats are often incorrect and cargo has not be introduced as a feature yet.
- Next is the country in which the airport is located and it's flag.
